What is the NASC?
The National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) is a nonprofit industry group dedicated to protecting and enhancing the health of companion animals and horses throughout the United States. Formed in 2001 when a complicated and erratic regulatory environment threatened the multibillion-dollar animal health supplement industry, the NASC has worked cooperatively with state and federal regulators to help bring about fair, reasonable, responsible, and nationally consistent regulation for supplements intended for companion animals and horses. NASC member companies are concerned and committed providers of animal health supplements from around the world who strive to improve the quality of products consumers depend on every day for their beloved dogs, cats, and horses.
The NASC created its Quality Seal Program as part of its ongoing effort to improve and standardize the animal health supplement industry. The presence of the NASC Quality Seal on an animal health supplement signifies to consumers that the product comes from a reputable company that has successfully completed an independent quality audit.
To earn permission to display the Quality Seal on their products, website, product literature, and ads, NASC member companies are first required to demonstrate compliance with the following criteria:
- The company must have a Quality Control Manual in place that provides written Standard Operating Procedures for production process control. This helps ensure the company is providing a consistent and quality product.
- The company must have an Adverse Event Reporting/Complaint System in place to continually monitor and evaluate products and ingredients.
- The company must follow proper Label Guidelines for all products and all forms of labeling.
- The company’s product labels must include any specific Warning and Caution Statements recommended by the Food & Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine and the NASC Scientific Advisory Committee for particular ingredients.
